FAQs
Home Health Agency NursesWhat is a home health care skilled nurse?
Skilled nursing care is the most advanced level of private care provided by an RN (Registered Nurse) or LPN/LVN (Licensed Practical Nurse). A skilled nurse is a licensed professional whose goal is to improve a person’s health or maintain it— as well as prevent other medical conditions from developing.
What are an LPN/LVNs' primary duties?
LPNs work in teams under the management of RNs and physicians to perform basic nursing care, such as:
- Collecting and charting vital signs
- Distributing oral medications
- Checking blood sugar levels
- Ambulating, assistance with activities of daily living (such as getting dressed or eating/drinking)
- Assisting with bathing and toileting
- Other various patient care tasks
What are an RNs' primary duties?
RNs also perform many of the same LPN duties as well. However, the scope of practice for the RN is broader. It includes other responsibilities, such as:
- Assessing patients
- Starting IVs
- Distributing oral and IV medications
- Collecting blood samples
- Performing physical exams
- Conducting various diagnostics tests
- Educating patients and families
- Working with physicians to determine patient treatment plans
- Counseling patients
- Coordinating treatments with ancillary healthcare professionals (such as physical therapy, nutrition consults, wound care consults, diabetes specialist consults, etc…).
Is there a difference between "home care" and "home health care"?
The term “home care” refers to any type of care (medical or non-medical) that is provided for the client in their home. While home care can be used to describe both medical and non-medical care, typically “home care” should be seen as non-medical care such as companionship/homemaking services and personal care services, while “home healthcare” refers specifically to skilled nursing care and other care such as speech, physical or occupational therapy.
